In the church world in which I’ve worked for many years, the season is about to change. Next Wednesday begins the liturgical season of Lent, when the church enters a time of preparation and repentance leading up to Easter.
I remember in 2020 how some friends were saying it was “the Lentiest Lent” they’d ever Lented. That was still early days in the pandemic. 2021 felt much more “Lenty” to me, another full year into it, with so many more people affected, and the world still painfully waiting for vaccines to help turn the tide.
Now here we are again. Our third Covid Lent. How will we enter it? What will help us prepare for Easter this year? Do we really require practices to help us face our mortality? Do we need reminders of our deep need for God’s grace? Do we need glimpses of that grace through poetry and beauty? Do we just need to breathe?
I need all of that, to one degree or another. Maybe you do too. I’m putting together some writing prompts for Lent to help us use our words to pay attention to what matters. Stay tuned for those.
In the meantime, here’s a pre-Lent prompt, just for fun.
a writing prompt
Write about something you’ve lent to someone else.
Or write about something someone has lent to you.
